Today everything is recorded HD video. Cameras like the Sony NEX-5 make it good and cheap digital cameras this is a fairly decent job of it (forget cell phones). But if you really great quality HD movies, and we mean nothing-nothing beats a full-fledged camcorder. Yes, they are expensive, but if you go over that, watch YouTube clips on a monitor and view colorful, precise scenes on a big screen HDTV, you’ll sell. We got the chance to try out the Everio GZ-HM1, JVC best consumer-oriented model, to see how well a 2010 edition can.
Features and Design
The silver-black body accented GZ-noir vibe HM1 not the smooth top models from Canon, Vixia HF as the S21, but it does not have the bubble gum look is not cheap video makers. The long, flat camcorder has a sturdy, working-like appearance and it fits perfectly in your hand. With the battery attached, the beautifully balanced camcorder weighs just over a pound and measures 2.7 x 2.9 x 5.4 (WHD mm).
The front of the GZ-HM1 is a Konica Minolta 10x optical zoom, the 46mm f /2.8-4.5 accepts filters. The lens 48.3-483mm equivalent in movie mode, 38.5-385mm as a photo camera. It is not very wide, we prefer that the feed mode in the 2010 camcorders, but they are good enough. The lens cover opens and closes when you power on/off the device. Again, a flash for improved quality and a series is key for the wheel on the lower right. This wheel, you can manually focus and brightness. The right side has to keep a comfortable, adjustable velcro on the camcorder calm as you shoot.
The record is quite simply followed with stereo microphones in the vicinity of the lens through a strange set-up accessory shoe. Instead of just attaching an optional microphone or light directly onto the camcorder via a hot shoe as the top models do you have to screw in a provided adapter. Then the optional equipment gets fixed on this cold boot. Yes there is a microphone input on the back is the set-up is clunky. So with high hopes, we discovered right away that camcorder is not perfect. The GZ-HM1 has a nice big zoom rocker and a dedicated shutter button for taking snapshots. Nearby there are three buttons that this camcorder takes on the ordinary. There are aperture and shutter priority buttons and a user key. If you are in the manual, you set the shutter speed between -1 /4000. the setting of a second and aperture f/2.8-5.6. As you make adjustments to the laser touch-sliders on the left side of the LCD screen you will see immediately whether you’ve exposed under-or over your shots. The user key are options for a dedicated mode such as white balance, backlight compensation and so on (11 decisions).

The left side is where you spend most of the time because it is the home of the Friends of the swing-out 2.8-inch widescreen LCD monitor. The screen is rated 208K pixels, and even if it’s not a great number, holds the screen to the point even in direct sunlight. The display is a bit small for our taste and we hope JVC bumps it up to at least a 3-inch model with newer models. On the left is the Laser Touch interface, which we do not really love because it is not very accurate and we tend to exceed the desired setting. A preferred physical joystick or touch screen system of the Canon HF S20. Hopefully JVC will update the system on its newer models.
Along the monitor’s lower bezel are five keys including OK and Menu. The operations for the other three buttons vary with the mode on the body to the screen, SDHC card slot in. It’s art. Although this camcorder has 64GB of flash memory (good enough for nearly 6 hours of the highest quality video UXP) is good, with the slot, if you store your photos and videos on a card to a reader or videos on a compatible HDTV. We were surprised at this sophisticated camcorder does not accept the newer SDXC cards but really not a big deal yet. In time card makers come close to the new format of the 2 terabyte capacity, now 64GB is the largest of 32GB is the maximum for SDHC.
Other controls on the body include Power On/Off, Play/Record, upload view, export, and Direct Disc upload on YouTube makes pretty easy booking, change or display the amount of clutter on the screen, can export transfer videos to iTunes while direct disc simplifies the writing process (DVD, AVCHD and Blu-ray). You will also find the USB.
On the back is a slot for the battery, the Record button and two pockets for a variety of compounds Mini-HDMI, component, DC-in, headphone in, has A/V and microphone on the bottom of the Made in Malaysia Camcorder a tripod thread of metal, and change the battery release. All in all, the JVC GZ-HM1 is a fairly straight 2010 camcorder with a few surprises.

Performance and utilization
The JVC GZ-HM1 is a full HD AVCHD camcorder to record 1920x1080i video. It has has a 10.62-megapixel CMOS sensor and backlit this type of chip much less noise than typical CMOS imaging devices. JVC claims that it is characterized by using the camcorder as low as 4 lux at the 9 rating last year compared HM400. Equally important, it uses the 24 Mbit s codec that is best for the format. It eats memory, but it’s worth it. The 64 GB built-in flash memory holds just under 6 hours at 24 Mbps, 8 hours 21 minutes on the next step down-17 MBit s (XP-level). The 10.62MP sensor lets you capture true 3648 2736 pixels and stills without interpolation. In theory, everything should be up to great experience. Let’s see how they performed …
We tested the camcorder to the period of several weeks outdoors in bright sunshine as well as indoors, and the inclusion of a single candle in a dark room. Top high-resolution photographs were also taken. When you are done, we are the videos reviewed on a 50-inch HDTV with HDMI, just inspected images on a monitor (400%) and made borderless 8 x 10 prints without editing.
Before we get into the results, we will state LS-HM1 control is a beautifully designed camcorder and the large zoom rocker has a great feel. You can in/out to zoom quickly and accurately. Sad to say that this is not true for the laser-touch system. We ask for this JVC a larger full touch panel such as Canon and Sony models output. And while they change the interface, the screen can be expanded as well, since it wipes out in bright sunlight (not 208K pixels overlap with competitors offering 921K). Even with the smaller screen, the camcorder chews through batteries would be as a replacement part, a good investment if you buy them.
These are the key negatives the positives are the videos and stills. The films were first class with trees, an excellent, deep green and flowers just the right amount of yellow, pink and red. Clips were taken on the beach, and spot-on with nice wave reflections, accurate sky and colorful outfits to cyclists. The camcorder focuses quickly and sharply, handling in scenes with backlit really good. We even took a video of a single candle in a dark room and there was very little noise, thanks to the new sensor. Not to say digital artifacts had disappeared completely, but the scenes were very clean. After reviewing the video clips were very impressed because it matched the quality of the best HDTV pictures and even some hard disk BD.

JVC said it would work to improve the GZ-HM1′s Optical Image Stabilization system better than you went along and recorded. OIS was good but not perfect, since there were still bumps in these situations.
Overall, GZ-HM1 photos are quite well taken, rival top-end Canons even though the camcorder has only one AF versus 9 for the Vixias. Photos shot in bright light were really nice in the car, but for important shots or close-ups, you should use the manual focus. Colors were accurate and the files filled with detail. We even took still pictures from a candle in a black room with the flash virtually always a true test of the unity of the low-light capability. Results here were also very good with a minimal amount of noise. Even if the GZ-HM1 does not rival a DSLR for tweaks and burst modes, you will be more than satisfied with the results.
Conclusion
Late last year we had this to say about the 9-megapixel Everio GZ-HM400. “This is a very good camcorder that takes the quality 9-megapixel photos. We have problems with it (Laser Touch, wind noise) so it’s not the perfect two-in-one device that we have been looking after. If you keep these limitations in mind, you should like to go into life adventure record. ”
We can almost repeat the conclusion of the GZ-HM1, with its newer backlit 10.62 megapixel CMOS sensor. Videos were great, Stills improved and the noise microphone treated better, but oh, the screen-and laser-touch system! The GZ-HM1 costs over a large online retailer from legit. If really high quality movies and photos are your target, the JVC GZ-HM1 will deliver his conscious but definitely, the disadvantages.
