There are many of us who still love to our home videos to DVDs to watch and luckily there are a handful of camcorders on the market that records videos directly to DVDs. The Sony DCR DVD650 DVD Handycam camcorder does just that and also have the option of recording on a 16GB flash card or internal memory. This model comes with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, 2000x digital zoom and 60x optical zoom. It has a 2.7-inch rotating LCD screen and comes with an AC adapter, battery, AV cable, USB cable and software.

The Sony DCR DVD650 DVD Handycam camcorder measures 2.2 x 5.1 x 3.5 inches and weighs only 13.8 grams. Although it is still very portable, it’s a bit bulkier than other camcorders. This is due to the fact that it received a DVD in it. For a DVD camcorder, it’s quite compact. It sports Sony’s signature design cues, with rounded edges, and decorated with black, silver and gray.

The image stabilization system helps you clear images less blur due to shaking or other problems. Moreover, the 2.7” touchscreen LCD display also contributes to the joy of capturing video.

One of my favorite features on the Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam camcorder, the old-fashioned optical viewfinder. That’s very unusual in camcorders today. When a layer on the battery. The ‘optical seeker can shoot videos without using the LCD display. The camera automatically turns on when you flip the LCD screen and comes with a zoom microphone.

The zoom microphone automatically focuses on the topics you shoot, to minimize the effects of background noise. The quality of the videos at night can be improved (but maybe I have not found the right settings yet) taken at the regular lighting conditions were very clear and sharp. At the time of writing, the Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam camcorder, the price around $ 300 each, that’s very reasonable. As far as DVD camcorders go, it is currently one of the best in the market.

JVC GZ-HM320 Review

March 4th, 2011

Some of the worst video quality I’ve seen in a HD camcorder too late, the best I can say about JVC’s entry-level HD Everio camcorder models is that they are small and cheap. Although they are $ 60 to $ 100 less than HD competitors, they are determined by a small, insufficient resolution for HD-sensor, a 20x zoom lens with no optical stabilization (only electronically) and the lowest resolution LCD screen in its class.

Maybe JVC’s goal is to provide opportunities customers: the company offers 10 HD models for less than $ 800, these four nearly identical versions that list between $ 400 and $ 550 alone. Three different models are flash-only built-in memory, and the fourth is a 80 GB hard drive-based model that microSD cards instead of ordinary SDHC / SDXC cards take. It bears pointing out that the confusing lineup of JVC and unlike any other manufacturer out there, the same HD300 and HD320 are not products sibling to the HM300 and HM320, they have larger, higher resolution sensors and their flash The HM200-based brother.

JVC GZ HM320 CLosed JVC GZ HM320 Review

One thing is the entry-level models JVC have going for them is great: they are the lightest and smallest in their class. The length of the body of the flash models is approximately the width of the palm a big man, the hard drive version is slightly longer and wider, which can provide comfortable shooting for big-handed people. Though made of shiny plastic, the camcorder feels reasonably well built.

Under a door on the bottom right is a pair of SDHC card slots, the models with a built-in memory only a single slot. I find this map location is better than most of the other designs I’ve seen, it’s out of the way and not block the thin grip strap. I also like the location of the USB connector, which shares a spot above the battery with the DC input. To the front of the camcorder, the tire grip handle, which turns into a wristband. The top controls include the photo shutter button and zoom lever.

The recess accommodates LCD and playback controls, uploading (YouTube, via the computer), and an on / off button that also goes through three different screens of information. I’m not a big fan of the multi-duty power button, for me, it’s a surefire way to finally turn off the camcorder accident. The component, AV, and mini-HDMI out jacks take the recess.

The touch-sensitive buttons on the LCD ring, only OK and the menu to fix the other three are context sensitive. You navigate through menus via a slider on the left lane, which lights up when you use it. The demo’s probably good in retail and gives you something beautiful to watch as the camcorder boots, but it is only modestly effective as a navigation technique – it’s too inaccurate for that or for manual focus, which leads to accidentally slide-bys along your desired options.

JVC GZ HM320 Side JVC GZ HM320 Review

The feature set is fairly typical. Most notably, there is face-priority AE / AF, video categorization, interesting time-lapse video, and a faux motion sensor mode which records when it detects changes in brightness. Unfortunately, none of this makes for the lack of optical image stabilization. JVC not between optical and electronic stabilization (EIS) can be distinguished on its website, referring to both the “Advanced Image Stabilizer”, but the HM300/320 manual refers to it as the “digital image stabilizer”. Unfortunately, MER degrade video quality, and the camcorder just does not have the extra pixels to spare for the EIS to work well.

On the upside, the autofocus works quite intelligent, and seems accurate distinction between subject and background without significant delays. 1400 mAh battery and a reasonably long time, somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes.

Which brings me to video quality. Although I do not expect much for $ 450, I’ll admit I’m probably just a little harder JVC competition for marketing this as an HD camcorder when to adhere to the letter but not the spirit of the definition of HD ( Canon HF plays the same game with his R series). The sensor is small and its native resolution is somewhat mysterious.

It varies with the zoom, that’s another trick that I stumble, it’s a now-common method of gaming the zoom range of your camcorder lens, but it can only be accepted if the effective pixel count is still above the minimum needed to get a native HD capture, about 2.1 megapixels. But the HD500 HM300/320/340 and effective resolution ranges from 1.1 megapixels down to 750,000 pixels, which then interpolate the camcorders up to 1920×1080 HD.

JVC GZ HM320 Open JVC GZ HM320 Review

The low-light video looks surprisingly decent, as long as you play them finished. Full size is quite soft and noisy.

Although $ 450 sounds cheap for an HD camcorder, if the selection or budgetary need that you are willing to sacrifice image quality, you might as well pay less for a decent standard-definition model. Otherwise, I suggest you get a bit more for a true HD format as the Panasonic HDC-SD60. Of the four options, JVC, only if it is cheapest at the moment is even worth considering, and the HD500 is simply overpriced.

Panasonic SDR-S50A Camcorder Review

March 2nd, 2011

While most would seek to hi-def recording and viewing the handiwork again a big shiny plasma or LCD TV, the reality is that hi-def is not the be-all and end all. It is the content and the story that counts in the long term. As such, if the market in this way, the new Panasonic SDRS50 to fly from the retailer shelves.

This small camcorder has some features not found in units 3 times that price, the standard of optical image stabilization which is far superior to the most common electronic version. Mind you, if you take the lens to its full zoom, 78x as much as you need it. And make no mistake, this is not a grainy digital zoom, but again a high speed optical! At 33 mm, the broad not too shabby either.

Controls are minimal, however. Open the LCD screen and powers the device, the mode (play or record) is set by a slider switch above the battery compartment – where the viewfinder would be if there was one. The top of the camera has a zoom rocker/big switch, single shot button and the manual / OIS and Intelligent Auto switches. The bezel of the LCD screen, the AE/AF, menu and an enter button. Finally, on the body and closed below the LCD screen is a button to record long, an A/V port, USB port and an SD card slot to make.

SDR-S50 model as the name suggests, only equipped with facilities for recording to SD cards and indeed, the record button will not even allow himself to be pressed when no card in the slot! I think this is a good thing because I have many times with DSLR cameras on the LCD to warn, but not through the viewfinder that no card is installed caught! And still you can “shoot”.

A nightmare though – and I’ve said this before – is that no card is supplied with the camera. It staggers me why even a rudimentary 512MB card is not thrown with these cameras. They must cost cents for manufacturers to buy.

The Intelligent Auto (iA) mode that automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode includes an AF / AE Tracking function to a moving subject to ensure that it continues to be included in an optimal focus and exposure settings, in addition to an Intelligent Contrast Control feature tracks automatically adjusts brightness for the best contrast possible anywhere. Other features include Face Detection, Advanced OIS and Intelligent Scene Selector. There is also a YouTube-timer built in to ensure that you do not exceed 10 minutes.

The SDR-S50 is small, small enough to fit in a larger bag – say, a jacket – and weighs just over 200g and a small, lightweight camera is surprisingly fits very comfortably in the hand and does not feel at all vulnerable. If you are thinking of getting a flip and Vado camera is very popular at the moment, but are not so fussed about hi-def and prefer a ‘real’ camera body, the SDR-S50 will fit the bill and you ‘ll love it.

Sony HDR-XR150 Camcorder Review

February 28th, 2011

Like other models in the Sony Handycam range, Sony HDR-XR150 comes with an exhaustive array of consumer-friendly features and gimmicks, including spot focus, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Steady Shot, a “child priority” tool, and an Intelligent Auto Smooth Slow Rec. Oddly, it lacks a built-in GPS, which is common on many of its stable mates.

Sony HDR XR150 Open Sony HDR XR150 Camcorder Review

In terms of specifications, the Sony HDR-XR150 is quite similar to last year’s batch of HD Handycam models, the same HDR-XR100 included. The biggest improvement of the HDR-XR150 is probably the extended 25x optical zoom lens, which is very impressive for a high-definition camcorder. (Previous Sony models come with a 15x optical zoom, or less.) HDR-XR150 also comes with SD / SDHC memory card support, in addition to own Sony’s Memory Stick format. In other words, you have no fewer than three recording formats available to you.

The Sony HDR-XR150 is impressive for a compact HDD camcorder. Despite packing in a 120GB hard drive, the device weighs just 300g and measures a little 57x67x114mm. Compared with previous disk-based giants such as Sony HDR-SR12E, it feels like someone zapped by a shrink-ray. Needless to say, it has to fit in your pocket with a minimum of hassle.

For the asking price, the Sony HDR-XR150 has a solid video performance. It features a new Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, and celebrated Sony Bionz chip. It records 1080p video in the AVCHD format at 24 megabits per second (Mbps) – Sony Handycam previously made do with an inferior bit rate of 16Mbps. The 1/4in ‘R Exmor CMOS sensor, meanwhile, provides an effective pixel count of 1350k. This may sound a bit miserable on paper, but the HDR-XR150 still had a good job in our imaging tests.

We are connected to a Pioneer KURO PDP-C509A plasma TV with the included component (RGB) cable and were very impressed with the results. Images were cleaned in low light with less noise than we are accustomed. The Sony HDR-XR150 also comes with a 3.1-megapixel stills mode, which should prove adequate for Facebook – just. Unfortunately there is no built-in flash or a night mode, so you happy snaps to be limited to daytime.

For menu selections, Sony sticks to his tried and tested touch screen LCD. The interface is fast and responsive, but it also suffers a few design glitches. For example the “scroll down” arrow icon will return to a ‘My Menu’ after a few seconds of inactivity. This means that we regularly return to the main menu if we wanted a different menu. A little practice helped to overcome this problem, but it was still frustrating. The 2.7-inch display can also lead to problems for fat fingers (we much prefer 3.5in display of the Sony HDR-CX520′s).

We were not surprised, but disappointed by the absence of external audio options. Instead, you are stuck with 2-channel stereo microphone of the Sony HDR-XR150′s. On the positive side, the user can manually adjust the microphone level, and zoom microphone helps to cut out ambient noise – to some extent.

The 120GB hard drive Sony HDR-XR150 can hold up to 50 hours and 30 minutes of high-definition images in the LP mode – or 11 hours and 20 minutes at the highest possible quality. As mentioned, a Memory Stick slot and a SD / SDHC card slot for hybrid recording. You can also record video in standard definition as the mood strikes you.

Sony HDR-XR550V Handycam Camcorder Review

February 26th, 2011

While Sony changed some of the controls, the camcorder is the same basic design as the models of last year, and as such, it feels very solid. If the hard disk XR550V the bulge makes the camcorder hard to hold, the CX550V may give you a more comfortable grip.

All of the door of the camcorder covers are securely fastened. The camcorder has a sliding door at the top of the shoe, another slider near the lens on the right side of the microphone and headphone jacks, two separate covers under the record for its own AV out and DC power in, and one in LCD hiding the mini-HDMI and USB connectors.

Sony HDR XR550V Side Sony HDR XR550V Handycam Camcorder Review

We do not like the location of the final connections, because we hate the LCD screen lid with cables to it. The location makes it difficult to hold and move the camera around when you connect it to a TV. However, this seems a popular place for manufacturers to stash the connectors.

In front of the camcorder, you’ll find a large-barreled lens hood and an electronic flash at the top – there is no built-in video light – as a manual dial on the side. The manual dial has long been a staple on the top-end Sony’s consumer models, but Sony has demonstrated its capabilities a bit. Pressing the dial on the center button switches the operation to the currently selected option, holding the button in manual mode you can select what you would want.

As for manual functions, the XR550V has options for focus, exposure, iris, shutter, auto exposure shift and white balance shift. We always feel like the hub of it, but if you manual focus, shutter and iris controls are, it gets annoying bouncing around the options with only the internal control. However, this is how all the prosumer models can be operated and is a trade-off for their relatively small sizes.

To the front-top of the unit is the five-channel mic, for the gazillionth time, we would prefer that Sony use their space for a stereo microphone with a good separation. Moreover, although it has a microphone input, the camcorder does not record level than the reference level with two choices: normal and low.

Sony HDR XR550V Back Sony HDR XR550V Handycam Camcorder Review

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) has a higher resolution than its predecessors did, like those on several of its competitors, but it’s smaller. While EVFs are a vanishing breed, we find they are essential, no matter how bad they are. So we are disappointed with how small and low XR550V is increasing.

Although we may complain about the geotagging system, still in its infancy, we had no quibbles about the performance of XR550V’s. Sony AF system really stands out against its competitors and Sony seems to have improved over previous models. Although not quite get as fast as Canon and Panasonic, it’s much more correctly estimate what should be the subject of the scene, wrongly focused on the background with much less frequency than the other camcorders. Plus, the lens focuses unusually close.

We wish the camcorder can focus a little faster, while panning, but it is not unusual, and we think the trade-off for accuracy. Although it offers a touch-based spot focus and spot meter, it did not work well with small objects that we really needed to.

The steady image stabilization system works well as usual. The camcorder only real weakness is the battery life. In practice, the battery seems to last for only about one hour, but that’s still better than some of the competition. The deep cavity battery seems to be designed for optional higher capacity battery NP-FV70.

Sony HDR XR550V Top Sony HDR XR550V Handycam Camcorder Review

But it’s still good for its class, when viewed on a computer, its video quality does not look as sharp as the previous generation did, but uses the same sensor, but has a shorter, wider-angle G-series lens. But on a TV, the video looks great.

General, the video is quite fringing. At best, the colors are bright, saturated and accurate, and there is a fair bit dynamic range, as is typical for its class, it still shows a tendency to blow out highlights, but with much less cleavage of both the highs and lows than usual.

The video detail in extremely high-bandwidth scenes, such as a busy water fountain, a little mushy. When photographing in the highest bitrate mode (1920×1080 at 24 Mbps), the video looks particularly a higher contrast than the lower rates shot. That makes it doubly annoying that Sony with the standard 1440×1080 pixels 9Mbps mode.

The camcorder fares well in low light compared to its single-chip competitors, maintaining a reasonably sharp picture with only a modest amount of noise. However, Panasonic’s high-end three-chip (3MOS) models provide more saturated, less noisy results in the same circumstances.

Low Lux mode seems more intelligent than most low-light modes, only given if necessary. It certainly produces a brighter picture than the standard mode, with only a modest increase in noise and no slow-shutter artifacts, such as the shutter will not drop below 1/30 second.

As we zoomed in the test scene, but there was a noticeable change in the white balance and saturation as the drop across the threshold, where the focal length and have long needed a change in either shutter or aperture. The less congested setting “fixed” when we get zoomed.

Frustrating, Sony’s camcorder excessive resolution for years. To deliver the advertised 12-megapixel images the camera uses interpolation to scale up the native 6-megapixel images. Full size of the photos are only post-processed mess. They still need to print quite up to 8×10 inches (20×25 cm).

Conclusion

For the price, we must admit that we expect a little better – sharper video, enhanced low-light performance and a less cumbersome interface on top of the list – but Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V still very good at the rates of its competitors. Unless you absolutely need to store much video on the camcorder or when you have large hands that can benefit from the extra grip of the hard disk provides, the cheaper CX550V is a much better deal than its more expensive brother hard drive.

Samsung H200 Camcorder Review

February 21st, 2011

Selling camcorders is a tough old business now. With smartphones, digital SLRs and compact cameras, all now offer HD video modes, the traditional barrel shooter video is threatened. So what can the Samsung H200 budget to provide for an equivalent point-and-shoot camera can not?

Samsung H200 Front Samsung H200 Camcorder Review

Well, for starters, it has a huge 20x optical zoom lens, which emit no DSLR, compact or smartphone for six people. And the pairing of this possibility, in very close with an excellent quality – there is very little chromatic aberration and barrel distortion – and a very effective optical image stabilizer.

The latter is the most impressive feature of the H200. In wide angle is smoothed even the most unstable of single-handed handles nearly complete, and it works well with 10x zoom when shooting in both mitts. The fighting starts at full zoom, but hardly surprising given the increase in supply. For the money, no other camera we’ve seen offers more effective stabilization.

It’s a promising start, and the picture quality remains up the good work. The H200 shoot Full 1080i HD images at 50 fields per second at a speed of 17Mbit/sec, 720p at 25fps, and performed well in our tests. In our low-light test, noise kept to an acceptable level and the colors were well balanced, if a little washed out. We found the autofocus a little slow, but generally correct, unless the light was really dim.

Audio from the top-mounted stereo microphone is clear, with a wind cut function for shooting in light conditions. And we appreciate the aperture and shutter priority modes, allowing you to have a degree of control over your video taking. The H200 is a bargain-basement camcorder, though, and it does show through in some areas. It has a 2.7 inch touchscreen, touch and focus, but no subject tracking or face recognition. You do not get a light or a flash and the lens is a manual flick-switch job. It has no microphone input, or a hot shoe, there is no built-in storage (you have your own SD card to add), and the building is rather plasticky.

If after a fancier features or luxury feel it is clearly not the way to go, but for good quality video at a low price is not much better on the market. excellent zoom The Samsung HMX-H200′s lens and optical image stabilization make it a very tempting to buy.

Toshiba Camileo H30 Full-HD Camcorder Review

February 11th, 2011

How far you go the way of compromise in the name of bags a bargain? That is the question you need to ask yourself when considering the Toshiba Camileo H30. Just € 150, it’s ridiculously cheap. At that price, you’d probably expect low resolution and limited features, but the H30 can record HD video up to 1080p, take 10-megapixel photos, has a large (3-inch) LCD screen and comes with a wide selection accessories. But there is a catch – and it’s quite a big one.

Toshiba Camileo H30 Front Toshiba Camileo H30 Full HD Camcorder Review

Though hardly ugly, we would not exactly call the H30 a miracle of modern design. The shiny black plastic and metal coatings is probably meant to look classy, but comes out looking a bit cheap. Buttons feel thin and, while quite small and light, the boxy body does not do the product any favors. Although spacious, the 3-inch folding screen is actually the wrong shape for high-definition video. It is a square 4:3 screen, giving you black bars on the top and bottom, as you shoot HD (which is always 16:9), so you never get the full benefit of the size of the screen, unless you’re using photo mode.

Perhaps surprisingly the price is that the Camileo H30 uses a touchscreen interface and, though somewhat basic, it is actually quite effective. It is not capacitive or something, so do not expect to be using iPhone-style gestures and swipes. Instead you have to scroll or select menus and settings, which is quite intuitive. Institutions are not too complicated either – picture quality, manual white balance, scene and output modes are beyond the complexity of the device.

Furious, the H30 has a habit of “forgetting” certain settings when connecting the camcorder to standby. The electronic image stabilization, for example, is not particularly effective. Most people would probably assume that if you ‘on’, it would continue. This is not the case. The H30 back to many of the default settings when you close the LCD screen or disable the device to close, and that includes turning off the stabilizer.

Toshiba’s HD-cam budget uses a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor for video at 1080p at 30 frames per second progressive (also known as 1080/30p). 720p is also available at 30fps. For higher frame rates, you need to set the quality standard-definition 480p/WVGA, which runs at 60fps drop. Images are processed as H.264 AVI files that the benefits of the AVCHD codec used on most other more expensive camcorders lack. We also found some compatibility problems with the file format – our AVIs would not play on a PlayStation 3 console, for example.

Toshiba Camileo H30 Toshiba Camileo H30 Full HD Camcorder Review

There is no built-in storage speak (SD / SDHC cards up to 32GB can be used), but the H30 includes a 5x optical zoom, which many would have stuck with an inferior digital zoom. HDMI is one of output options and other pleasant surprise is that an HDMI cable included in the box as part of a fairly wide range of included accessories. Standard AV and USB cables are supplied as a universal power adapter, lens cap, remote control and a simple case. Battery life is respectable. The claimed record time is two hours and 30 minutes, and in our tests, the H30 the power of the hotel, certainly longer than that of many high-end camcorders we’ve seen recently.

In terms of performance, the Camileo H30 wavers somewhere between mediocre and just awful. Even in sunlight and with the maximum quality, the camera provides an acceptable video image, but colors are hardly recognizable to their real-life counterparts, looking to mature and to give an exaggerated magenta cast. Definition is not always as sharp as it could or should be, with fuzziness around the edges of objects.

The frame rate is too low for something to provide more detail smooth motion, something worse by the fact that the image stabilizer, for some reason, not available when the device is set to 1080p. Indoors, unless you have access to plenty of sunlight through the windows and skylights have picture quality is very bad indeed. It is true that most cheaper camcorders struggle in low light, adding grain to compensate. The H30 adds noise by the bucket load and still looks too dark.

The 720p setting, meanwhile, offers little more than a slightly worse picture in exchange for a little more recording time per gigabyte of storage. Whatever the picture settings, the H30 is the recording of sound is universally weak. The top-mic pictures of all unwanted ambient noise, including finger movements, zoom motors.

Toshiba Camileo H30 Back Toshiba Camileo H30 Full HD Camcorder Review

On the photo side, the story is slightly better. High-resolution pictures taken outdoors are usually detailed and look good enough to print. Inside, pictures tend to look blurry. There is a flash there, but we found this gave us mixed results, often give our pictures a strange greenish tint to them look like they were taken on a instamatic 1970 and left in the sun to disappear.

Verdict

We are wary of rolling out clichés like you get what you pay for, but rarely uses that much more irrelevant phase than with the Toshiba Camileo H30. Granted, there are a handful of surprisingly large inclusions, such as an optical zoom and touch screen controls. In terms of actual video recording, but do not let the seemingly high-end specs fool you – this is a lower than average quality camcorder with the lowest price. It is not a complete write-off, though. The costs can make a good purchase for a beginner or a student, for example. But who wants to record decent quality images should look elsewhere.
