Olympus PEN E-PL2 CMOS Review

January 27th, 2011

The latest model in Olympus Micro Four Thirds pen line passes through an appeal to beginners ready for a more technical experience. Like the E-PL1, E-PL2 serves as a springboard for photographers who have mastered the pocket point-and-shoot, but are wary of big investments DSLR body. The E-PL2 begins where its predecessor left off, and still includes the 12.3-megapixel, high-speed Live MOS image sensor found in the more professional Olympus E-30 and E-620 DSLRs. Entry-level shooters will be pleased with extensive features and capabilities packed into an equally stylish cut and edited handy body.

Features and design

We saw a lot of this design at CES: the camera settings in several shades of vintage, retro feel. It is definitely cool, and everyone impressed by the massive array of colors Canon and Nikon offer their point and shoots will be pleased that the step performance of the camera does not necessarily want you to be eliminated. Olympus offers the E-PL2 in black, silver, red and white.

For the more experienced photographers, the details behind the ergonomics of the E-PL2′s issue anymore. The E-PL2 measures 115.4 mm x 72.7 mm and features a 3-inch LCD screen, which is larger than last year’s 2.7-incher, and has twice the resolution (460K vs. 230K) . It is slightly slimmer than its predecessor, weighs about 12 grams. Just to give you an idea, the Nikon D700 weighs 35 grams, and the Canon PowerShot S95 weighs six grams.

Olympus told us that the updated model is better suited for one hand shooting (some complained the E-PL1 was not particularly easy to keep), and the power button has changed. The E-PL1, it was almost identical to the shutter button, and now adapted to prevent accidentally shutting it off or on through more discreet built the pop-up flash, flash shoe, microphone, and a selector (which remains unchanged ) still sit on top.

The screen upgrade is pretty important, because without a viewfinder, photographers are totally dependent on the 3-inch LCD screen to shoot in the manual or menu options to use. Anyone familiar with a DSLR would be initially difficult to operate the controls, but it just takes some getting used to.

In addition to your camera, Olympus includes a battery and charger, combined USB and RCA video cable, shoulder strap, Olympus software, and a Micro Four Thirds M. Zuiko 14-42mm zoom lens kit.

Performance and use

We tested the camera in ISO levels and compared with the performance of the Nikon is D3100. To be fair, the Nikon is a horse of a different color and costs about $ 100 more than the E-PL2. That said, it seems important to the PEN series similar to his big brother DSLRs (especially since it priced the same way for some).

Before we get too technical, there are a number of practical reasons why less experienced photographers will like this camera. Its size and feel fit somewhere between pocket-sized point-and-shoots and DSLRs their own pockets. You certainly can not sling around your wrist, but it’s still light enough that it’s not a hassle to carry.

The E-PL2 also has an extensive range of automatic controls and built-in filters. These additions were hot at CES this year, but Olympus may have done best with the E-PL2. It has more scene modes to choose to choose from, and built-in filters vary in quality (the dramatic tone was pretty cool, but the Soft Focus was not great). Overall, the filters looked less amateur than many competitors. Perhaps more importantly, the institution iAuto delivers great results: it focuses quickly and has a fast shutter speed. Also noteworthy is the impressive color balance in auto mode, largely thanks to new processor, the E-PL2, it takes photo-saturation and noise reduction a notch.

On to the technical aspects. We shot the E-PL2 and D3100 at their highest ISO speeds – 6400 and 12800, respectively. While we do not recommend shooting at that institution (the images are pretty grainy), the E-PL2 held her own against the D3100. The Nikon DSLR’s focus and shutter speed are undoubtedly faster than the E-PL2, but that is the nature of the beast if you two together, so it’s not terribly important. We tested both all the way down to ISO 200, and while the Olympus performed well and certainly made for a camera of its capabilities, the Nikon’s image is more detailed and had more contrast. We wish to reiterate that these cameras are not sold at each other, the comparison only serves as a reference point.

We compared their ability to out and Dual Image Stabilization mode to shoot – and the E-PL2 impressed. The images were as clear and sharp as the Nikon’s. Zooming into the pictures later, the D3100′s slightly cleaner, but nothing significant. The only case the DSLR really defeated the Micro Four Thirds device was in low light settings. In a fast elevator photo shoot, the E-PL2 produced some pretty orange pictures, although still passable. Nikon’s were certainly more on target with hue and saturation.

There is a dedicated button for video recording, and we were able to provide high quality video recording. You can also capture still images while in the shooting, certainly a bonus, and the Live Guide function adjusts the contrast and tone editing for live recording. The camera shoots in 720p HD, and while the added novelty of shooting in one of the art filters. It can compete with other digital camera / camcorder pairs, but it’s pretty clear this is not the primary function of the E-PL2.

Conclusion

The E-PL2 is a pleasant and convenient camera. That said, it is also a difficult purchase to justify. Budding photographers would approach this transition period, but intending to their repertoire over a Micro Four Thirds expand and fully equipped DSLR will have the $ 600 plunge. That’s $ 100 more than last year E-PL1, already criticized as too expensive. The problem is compounded by how quickly you can outgrow PEN Series: Users are really serious about photography could find themselves ready for something like the Nikon D700′s in no time, which means that you are looking for another expensive investment.

When it comes to Micro Four Thirds camera, the E-PL2 is a top choice. The image quality and size makes it easy to use, and shooters are pretty pictures that do not require the computer to edit (unless of course, you’re the type to post your pictures through that process). Really, our only problem with the pricing, and not thinking about the possibilities of the E-PL2.

Olympus PEN E-P2 Review

December 20th, 2010

The Olympus Pen E-P1 flashed onto the scene in June last year, we knew we were looking at something special, distinctive not only for its appearance, but also because there is so much fun. There were some shortcomings, however, and the second coming of moving some of these clearly add an accessory port on the back, above all, you have the option of attaching an electronic viewfinder address.

But the Micro Four Thirds landscape has changed in the last 6 months, especially with the birth of the Panasonic Lumix GF1 that much of the same retro styling, but also packaged in a pop-up flash, something that still missing is from this version of the pen. Can the E-P2 compete, or Panasonic has stolen a march?

The Olympus E-P2 brings a black color scheme of the retro styling of the E-P1, with bold looks, you’ll love or hate either or. Once on the road with the two models of the new pen, it seems that Olympus Styling play paid off. People are drawn to the pen and we think it looks cracking.

t measures 120.5 x 70 x 35mm, expressed in this space the Micro Four Thirds takes somewhere between the dimensions of most compact cameras and the smallest DSLR cameras. Micro Four Thirds has the advantages of interchangeable lenses with a larger Live MOS sensor, but allows the mirror block, which would drive the optical viewfinder in a traditional DSLR. The result is a hybrid camera with great image quality, but reduced volume.

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is what you should pull on the e-P2 than make do with the above, the VF-1 optical viewfinder, who had married with the 20mm pancake lens. This was one we highlighted shortcomings with the previous model. Now the VF-2 comes with the kit we tested here, including the 14-42mm zoom lens.

The switching between the EVF and the screen is simply a case of pressing the button on the back of the VF-2. It would have been nice if this automatically, using a sensor, but it works well enough. The EVF gives you a live view of the same display as you get it on the 3-inch screen on the back of the camera. This means you get all the 100% field of view display, settings, please have your target reticle, your image preview after recording and so on made. The VF-2 is also connected, so if you stand in line turned a shallow angle, or setting the camera on the edge of a table, you can see into it, rather than to afterwards. Some will never use this feature, and it does not have the same advantages as a swivel screen is in composition in tight situations, but it is a welcome addition.

With the EVF instead, but there is no way of attaching an external flash, which immediately put off some buyers, so that the Lumix GF1 a must-buy. At the time of drafting of the new Olympus E-P1 is in the wings, waiting for some of these problems, which may bring the E-P2 in an awkward position mails. Any accessories will acquire flash available as an extra, and external microphone and unity, for those who catch the quality of the sound they improve on video recording.

The type of filter, see the addition of two additional options on the E-P1: Diorama-and cross-process. We like the kind of filter. You could see them as too little spurious, but they are easily accessible and may have some dramatic effects that would otherwise create an amount of fiddling with settings or some post-processing back to your PC. You can also type filter to a picture that you have already taken. The disadvantage is that when shooting with a filter, image processing does slow things down.

Controls presented at the E-P2 offers direct access to settings such as exposure compensation, exposure and focus locks, ISO, focus mode, self timer and white balance. An additional Fn-key, custom set, a set of functions, depending on your preference, you can use it to replace manual focus, for example.

Setting other controls by pressing on the back “OK” button and entering a context menu that scrolls down the side of the display are called. Some of the advanced settings under the correct menu item (via the menu button) to hide, enable an additional field “settings” that the manual so that you are some of the features of the camera, which otherwise are inaccessible defined.

As we found with the E-P1, the P2-E will be a great artist. Metering and white balance seemed spot-on in our tests. Focusing is perhaps the weakness, as we found that left to itself the E-P2 would find something to focus near the object. There are different modes to try to focus AF, Continuous AF, manual and selected a combination that you optimize manually after autofocus has made his goal. Manual Focus automatically opens an enlarged area for you to confirm your subject is sharp and it works well here. There are 11 zones to focus and face recognition is pretty good at it, that the focus on people, if that’s your goal. We definitely think it is worth a visit focusing options in detail, as we do not always entirely happy with the default options.

The ISO range runs to 6400 and it is according to ISO 1600, not always to the detriment of the photo, but you will notice that some fine details to get out of here starts up. You can choose to set a maximum normal range for auto-ISO 1600 as standard. You are not the ISO level in the display in auto-mode display, but with quick access via the context menu, you can see the exposure settings for your scene as you go through the ISO range, which was helpful in deciding whether to keep hand- movement is the low-light photography, or find support. In-camera image stabilization offers 3 levels to increase hand-hold ability.

Film shot has always impressed with the new pens. The 720p video capture produces high quality video even in low light conditions and you can apply the type of filter, if you like, but you also get manual and aperture priority shooting modes, which you much creative freedom. They can to stabilize the image in the video and opt. Focusing Modes are different to video, so you may want to have continuous focus or manual if you try your hand pulls on some detailed focus when you are feeling adventurous. It is a shame that the AVI Motion JPEG format is limited to 7 minutes, but that keeps file sizes in check, the easier editing out later. The battery lives in the ground with the SD card and will give you approximately 300 pictures.

The Olympus E-P2 is a great little camera and one can not help feeling that this would have the camera, the E-P1 is meant to be. Although we have E-P1, the approaches have the E-P2 make it even more attractive, those who have invested in the E-P1, are now probably kicking themselves that they not wait a little. Olympus SP-590UZ Review

December 7th, 2010

A manufacturer has finally aesthetic safety net of the Ultra Zoom compact broken, and the Olympus SP-590UZ, gives us hope in a time when we seek to fear yet another all-black fixed lens model in this category had begun. The Ultra Zoom is a fascinating race, based on a massive zoom lens, right hand grip, pop-up flash and electric viewfinder, which may be found on the SP-590UZ. But it is the camera avant-garde architecture that apart from the flock of sheep, similar to a rifle from “Terminator” and not as a conventionally boring Ultra Zoom. We love the two-tone gunmetal silver and black color scheme of the fixed lens and the asymmetric grip of the right hand was surprisingly ergonomic. The SP-590UZ stands out in a crowd, especially when the 26x optical zoom is set to use.

On the other hand, the Olympus SP-590UZ, the chassis felt a little cheaper than the Nikon Coolpix P90 is. Both cameras weighed about a pound and occupied almost the same amount of space, but it was something about the SP-590UZ composition, which lead us to believe that the camera would not survive a moderate fall to the pavement and the Coolpix P90 performed. The Pentax X70 felt lighter than those two models, and also seemed a promising candidate for the “least likely to be a deadly tango with gravity Survive” excellent.

The SP-590UZ was one of the more comfortable ultra-zoom we’ve tested, thanks to its contoured grip and sticky surface. Ports were nice on thick, hidden doors, and the clunky shutter zoom toggle gave us a lot of plastic to work with. The camera lens cover had a habit of his fall off, even if we looked in the wrong direction, so an aftermarket cap would be a good idea. The pop-up flash was more stable than other models in the SP-590UZ is class, and the fluted edges of the mode switch performed well with the fingers. We could have a used a little rubber on the viewfinder and buttons could be larger, but the Olympus SP-590UZ overall design was a few notches above most.

Features

Olympus is not in the city go to advanced functions with the SP-590UZ, and that’s because most of the performance was poured in hardware upgrades. Regardless of his 15 – was 1/2000-second shutter capacity impressive for a compact, and the fact that we overcome this area and shoot at bulb for up to 8 minutes was awesome. The f/2,8 – f/8 aperture area was pretty standard, so that landscapes were not extended depth of field, the SP-590UZ strength. The camera has a nice burst mode that allows us to successive images at up to 10 frames per second. The Nikon Coolpix P90 trumped the SP-590UZ with 15 fps burst mode, but images could only be taken at 3-megapixels, while the SP-590UZ images in the 5-megapixel limited. The Coolpix P90 was 15fps capability really set a car scene mode without the ability to ISO. Performance wise, we moved the SP-590UZ for its degree of control.

While the Olympus SP-590UZ offers definitely a beautiful setting for a variety of shooting conditions, there were some automatic and manual controls, could impress us. The automatic white balance was always warm and inconsistent. Sometimes pictures would be cool, but the red levels in most of our shots were out of control. We struggled with the manual white balance, and found the white balance compensation for the best work to be done. The AF track was a nice idea, but the auto focus has had a difficult time tracking and locking in a particular subject as it moves around the frame. The manual focus was wobbly as well, which enlarged a tiny monitor in the middle of the LCD. Adjusting the focus yards took forever from left to right, because the levels were so tight and its movement speed rivaling a turtle on downers. We like the Auto Exposure Lock, which we refer to a specific exposure and lock it, so we were not forced to press the shutter button and allows the displacement of the lens.

Olympus SP 590UZ Top Olympus SP 590UZ Review

The Olympus SP-590UZ is naturally stocked with plenty of scene modes, but our favorite was also Multiple Expose to us to draw pictures and record them on a transparent filter allows. This could easily be achieved in Photoshop, but several Expose is a great feature to know if you play to create a beginner or just looking for inspiring full moon in the middle-whisper-forest images. The SP-590UZ had one of the better panorama modes we’ve seen what a rarity among the compacts is a consumer. There were two different modes to choose from and we found the second mode is the most effective, so we line up some of the previous image next image. The SP-590UZ dishes from a large portion of features, but we found many of them simply to occupy space menu, mode, especially beauty.

Hardware

Standard Imaging is at the heart of the Olympus SP-590UZ, and its 12-megapixel CCD 1/2.33-inch falls right in keeping with the Nikon Coolpix P90 and X70 Pentax. We did not expect to blown away by the SP-590UZ will, but that’s typical for a compact camera with a sensor setup like this. The SP-590UZ’s 26x optical zoom and 26mm wide-angle lens most of sucked in the spotlight. It is a very versatile shooting range for the average shooter, especially those who are not interested in changing lenses. to develop a 26x optical, we were able places we never knew travel zoom, and sometimes wish we could travel, and the zoom-race shows no signs of coming to a halt at the rate of these cameras.

The Olympus SP-590UZ’s image stabilization worked very well, especially at high magnifications. We used the pop-up flash in situations where we needed a fill, but rather was due to the built-in flash in the night, a risky proposition. From power on to first shot, the SP-590UZ in at about 3.3 seconds, which is not clocked fast by any means. For quick action, we held the camera and Hi-Speed 2 Prerecord mode, which included a 10-frame buffer before the shutter was pressed. For juice, the SP-590UZ runs on four AA batteries and the camera records JPEGs on xD cards.

Image quality

This is the “Hit or Miss”-poster camera. The Olympus SP-590UZ would crank a nice picture in a shooting environment and then a next very sub par in the picture. At close range, entered the SP-590UZ some ass, but landscapes were bland and lacked electricity, most colors. Even in the night, the SP-590UZ is a crapshoot, but we found that the more we manual control is used, the better our pictures were. This is not a good thing for those who rely on a good car, white balance and automatic program. Although we had our hands a little dirty with the SP-590UZ, there were times when the camera is a picture that made all the excitement produced value. The SP-590UZ Image SP-565UZ’s performance was on par with the 10-megapixel Olympus, there was no significant improvement in that department. We found typical picture viruses, such as color bleeding and color stains. While on the subject, definitely not the color SP-590UZ was calling, even though the camera saturation and contrast control. The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS nor the SP-590UZ, when they surpassed in the Battle of the shades. All in all, produced the SP-590UZ a decent image quality, but it was nothing to write home about.

Olympus SP 590UZ Back Olympus SP 590UZ Review

Both images here handle the blue sky very well. We were with the Olympus SP-590UZ provision of the fluffy white clouds in the first frame, and impressed by the details in the vines. We start in issues around the edge of the image but run. The lack of focus and shot fringing in the corners is not as flashy as the glaring lens distortion, so we had to shoot lines and structures in our view. The second picture shows some striking features in the branches of trees, but we get a nice little green lens flare at the bottom. Regardless of all the detail and sharpness is great in the picture, and both shots to earn an honorable mention.

The epic Battle of color with the Olympus SP-590UZ never seemed to end. We had to manually white balance, the first image so that it does not look like we shot it with a red filter. The colors are not melancholy and pop, and Red Hat seems to have a little splotching. At least the colors keep their borders. We used automatic white balance in the second picture, just to show you how ridiculous the red levels were directly out of the starting gate. We have also explode increased the saturation and contrast and colors. With a manual white balance and a little less saturation, the colors were at their best, but this is a camera that really makes you work for it.

A 26x optical we were up close and personal with Lady Liberty zoom, as we can see in these two images. The image stabilizer was excellent at full zoom, so at least the Olympus SP-590UZ is the main feature of his work is performed. However, Lady Liberty is a violent fringes along the line of her back exhausted. In fact, the whole image with fringes worked and is also a bit underexposed. But at 26 times the average wide-angle zoom is awesome. The sky is beautiful in the wide-angle picture, although the water is filled with a little edge patches. Impressive hardware, with an average imaging.

The next batch of images is a much better representation of what the Olympus SP-590UZ is the catch. We will work with Mr. Squirrel, which was launched at a full 26x zoom. Again, the most excellent image stabilization at full zoom and the detail in this picture is great. Despite signs of fraying, this was one of the best images from the SP-590UZ produces. The macro flower show some very fine details as well even though we had punchier colors in the flowers. We were not able to bury the lens in our subject, like other large angle, but what we experienced with the Olympus SP-565UZ.

Olympus SP 590UZ Front Olympus SP 590UZ Review

Contrast was not a huge problem this time, and the SP-590UZ balanced the sky and creatures fence quite well. We did not need to use a fill flash, but we did take advantage of the Shadow Adjust function, which was only a fantasy back-light compensation. We are not sure what’s going on in the final frame, but we can tell you what we see. First of all, the image appears almost black and white because of the matte colors. There is also a hefty amount of fringes and we can make some loud splotching on the insides of some of the can diameter to catch. At full resolution the picture is a mess, but it’s actually not bad, if reduced in size. Sensitive, irritable.

The first picture was by far our most successful night, and that, because we have the exposure is kept low. When we tried to increase the exposure of the night, we experienced the terrible effects of color splotching, in the next picture shows. We dig the traces of light and depth, set courtesy of the low shutter speed and aperture, but the sky looks like Windows 95 in Safe mode. Gadzooks! The first screen shot is a bit noisy, but the colors are not particularly for once and fading detail is impressive, as the available light. The same applies to the grim fourth picture, although we were a little more focus could have used to improve the realism of the dangling ducks. The last picture was a joke after about 100 attempts to hook caught a good photo of the full moon. The tones in the background is poor, but the shadows are sharp. So, you see how hot the automatic white balance. At night, the SP-590UZ was, you guessed it, hit or miss.
