Panasonic Lumix GF2 Review

March 7th, 2011

The Lumix DMC-GF 2 is for both to respond to the goodwill afforded his predecessor, the critically acclaimed DMC-GF1, and brings enough originality to the Panasonic party leader in the recent pretenders to the crown. GF1 was the first interchangeable lens Panasonic compact hybrid DSLR with the size of a small monkey instead of a DSLR. And, although the retro charm of its co-development rivals for the mirror-less Micro Four Thirds system in the Olympus Pen E-P1 and E P2, the photos lacked was generally critical sharper and more color-rich, next side, like for like comparison.

On a practical level, Panasonic also had an integrated flash with GF1, something the Pen range omitted the introduction of E-PL1 at the beginning of last year. In the second half of 2010 we have also had Sony’s NEX-3, NEX-5, Samsung NX100 plus frame models as an alternative for those looking for DSLR-like control in compact form.

The GF 2 explained to the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens with a compact flash, first impressions are good at picking it up. Starting up a cold in one second by a rapid movement of the upper plate on / off switch, a response roughly similar to a starter DSLR, the GF 2 comes across as both an enhanced version of the high performance Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Compact, and a more simplified – some say sophisticated – GF1 re-imagining of its predecessor.

Inevitably there are shared features and controls, but only up to a point. Integral Four Thirds Live MOS sensor, effective resolution is adopted and has remained the same, delivering the GF 2 photos in JPEG or RAW image format has a maximum count of 12.1 megapixels.

Additionally, if you choose to opt for the compact 3D H-FT012 lens announced by its maker, available as a standalone purchase, MPO files can also be generated, but only viewed in their glory with the aid of a stereoscopic 3D -equipped TV or monitor. MPO and JPEG can conveniently be shot in tandem as a more visible back-up is a long time writing subtle and file numbers are the same but with a different extension. Although, of course, 3D images are naturally composed and framed in a different way to 2D, so the results do not always work equally well in both formats. Then there is the fact that because JPEGs are a lowly 1,600 x 1,200 pixels when the 3D view in use.

Current kit lens options for the GF 2 at launch, and we could a game, include the camera body plus image-stabilized 14-42mm zoom body with lens stabilized 14mm “pancake” for those who want a solution that actually presses pocket or a body with two lenses, with an increase incrementally in each phase.

That said, the least expensive set-up option is still about 200 less than the GF1 was at the launch, at $ 700 to the overall GF 2 plus starter option of 14-42mm zoom, equivalent to 28-84mm at 35mm terms because of the unique features of the Four Thirds sensor in use. There is no authority for anyone who thinks only purchase option to swap their GF1 GF 2 to even maintain the existing lenses, like the author clearly believes that it is not an option likely to be taken.

It is not only pleased that Panasonic is looking for the GF series’ appeal to expand. Although it sports the same comforting feeling heavyweight, mostly metal building, the new camera is officially 19 percent smaller than its predecessor, while seven percent lighter in general. Initial treatment will still seem a bit of a brick to anyone trading up from a slim pocket snapshot – especially the camera ideal audience. To conceal a GF this camera is available in different colors for the first time, not only the sophisticated black with our review sample, but also silver or red in the UK, white and pink abroad. The campaign starts here to see the really rather elegant white version is moved to the United Kingdom.

Although the manufacturer is entitled to the GF 2 has grabbed an improvement over the GF1, we were a little disappointed to find that the soft bulge occurs when still quite small and skinny. Hold the camera in his right hand, there is barely enough room to wrap around your middle, as your thumb rests on a path to the rear, while the index finger hovers over the shutter.

Most striking of all changes to existing owners GF1, the fact that the recording program handy dial on the top plate has disappeared – but not quite. The options that now exist in the virtual world for the GF 2 offers touch screen control via the 3-inch, 460k-dot resolution rear panel LCD monitor, this screen also acts as a viewfinder in the expected absence of the additional optical or electronic viewfinder (EVF).

Panasonic Lumix DMC GF2 Back Panasonic Lumix GF2 Review

The latter is available as an optional extra, connected through the same accessory port on the GF1 introduced, which again directly above the LCD screen. Of an external flash can be further exploited, with the proviso that there is no room for both this and EFF at the same time. However, we found the screen to a skilled compositional tool, the size and brightness sufficient to check critical focus on the points of capture and review. That said, if we can put in a request for future generations it would be for an adjustable screen angle, as found on Canon PowerShot G12 EX1 and Samsung, to expand usability.

While the screen is impressively clear and the icons in it sensitive and respond immediately to any curious product, this would have been made bigger still on occasion. It is also clear that, apart from the need to view options, you will not actually meet the GF 2 the LCD screen as a touch screen at all if you do not want. This is because there are enough actual physical checks next to allow users to tab through to the impact functions and shooting options. To do this it would mean missing funky features like the ability to focus fire the shutter speed or prejudices by simply tapping your desired subject on the screen. With the screen Shutter mode is a bit too easy to fire off a shot by accident, however, as your fingers inevitably and accidentally lost on the screen when handling the camera.

Conclusion

Although the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF 2 is a worthy successor to the existing and soon finished GF1, it is not the most direct, like-for-like replacement. This means that existing owners would want to hang the camera that they already have – particularly when the tactile nature of a solid physical recording dial value over a virtual screen-based equivalent. While it’s marketed as a direct replacement, we feel the two cameras could happily exist in tandem for a while.

In the final analysis, while the GF 2 is an excellent camera in its own right, it does not feel as revolutionary as the first attempt by Panasonic in GF1. But if it attracts a wider audience for Micro Four Thirds and the inherent advantages – smaller bodies and smaller lenses, but the results are similar (if not an exact match for) the DSLR ‘big boys’, we’re all for it.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 has a maximum resolution of 12 megapixels from a multi-aspect 1/2.33-inch RGB CCD image sensor, and Panasonic has coupled an image stabilized, Leica DC Vario-Elmar branded 12x optical zoom lens with a 25mm high- equivalent wide angle. There is no optical viewfinder, but this is understandable given the strength of the zoom. The Panasonic ZS5 opts instead for a 2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 pixel resolution images and videos are well made and evaluated. Panasonic Lumix ZR3 Digital Camera Review

December 30th, 2010

Panasonic is set to Excel, with flexible lens in a compact body. The Lumix DMC-ZR3, for instance, is equivalent to a 25mm wide-angle lens and an 8x optical zoom in a chassis that is only an inch thick. It’s the same lens, the company uses on his 2009′s ZR1. In fact, the two cameras are almost the same as ZR3 has a 2-megapixel resolution emit up to 14 megapixels and can record video in AVCHD format Lite. Panasonic has a few other features, but these two are the most important upgrades, and both seem unnecessary. The ZR3 is a nice point-and-shoot camera, though, and overall the picture quality is very good. However, even if it is good in automatic mode, it pays to learn how best to use all that the camera offers.

Panasonic Lumix DMC ZR3 Angle Panasonic Lumix ZR3 Digital Camera Review

The ZR3 is an extremely compact camera lens into account its specifications. The camera looks and feels good, too. Although it is in black, silver, blue and red versions is available, its subtle design will not stand in a crowd. A nicely rounded right side gives you something to grab on to when shooting with one hand. The ZR3 Panasonic also offers high-end image stabilization – OIS power – which doubles the performance of previous repression MEGA OIS system from Panasonic. In my tests worked quite well, even when the zoom lens was in use, and it is for still images and movies.

The camera controls are simple and easy enough to use the out-of-the-box should be no problem for most people who will be using digital cameras. A silver plastic mode switch to, you can easily slip under recording options, so light that it often needed to be reset after taking in and out of a bag or case. Plus, you have to get press on the shutter button and the zoom ring, which may disturb some users. Otherwise, the remaining controls on the back of relatively large, easy to use and logically arranged. are switches for both the power and the change from scanning to reproduction is used, it is easy both to do without. There are also record a movie button on the back for quick recording of clips (though it takes a second it to start the recording).

The menu systems are largely straightforward. A Quick Menu button (Q. Menu) on the back bottom right opens a vertical line of the Shooting mode options sensitive. A general menu button sits in the middle of the four navigation buttons that double the exposure, flash, macro and timer control. The main menu system has four tabs: one for setup, one for photo features, the other for film features, and a travel mode. The travel mode, you can program the date, time and place for a trip, so that all income groups between the programmed data. There is also a slide show playback option so that you can go directly into which only took the photos and videos on the trip. If you hide a TV for playback, a door on the right side of the body followed by a Micro-USB/AV-Port and mini-HDMI connector.

Under a lockable door on the camera bottom of the battery and memory card compartment. The battery is rated for above-average 330 shots. However, various shooting modes, including filming, the battery wear down faster. The battery is not free in the camera, a power adapter is included.

Panasonic Lumix DMC ZR3 Top Panasonic Lumix ZR3 Digital Camera Review

The ZR3 is mainly a point-and-shoot camera, it has several options for Panasonic’s Intelligent Shooting better automatic results, but no control over aperture or shutter speed. In normal view mode you have control over results with settings for focus, exposure, color effects, white balance, ISO and exposure. You also get access to Panasonic Intelligent ISO to limit the maximum sensitivity to ISO 400, 800 or 1,600. (Because of the questionable photo results with ISO 1600, I recommend using the ISO 800 in low light.) If you are scene modes like 28 of them, the ZR3

The list includes such familiar portrait, landscape, night landscape, and more-unusual options, such as high dynamic artistic, Pin Hole and Film Grain. You can also associate two of your favorite scene modes with the MS1 and MS2 markers on the dial. Of course there is a fully automatic mode – Intelligent Auto (iA) – that the most appropriate scene mode helps determine and correct the blur, sharpness, brightness and questions. The last point on the scale goes to a Wish list mode saves images with low resolution camera 40 MB internal memory for quick recall. One use would recommend to accommodate public transport timetables and maps that will be even more useful by the wide-angle lens.

If you want to take close-ups that can ZR3 focus as close as 1 inch of a subject. Results look a bit over-sharpened, but not so much as to ruin in photos. It is a macro-zoom option, too, but it uses a digital zoom to get closer, which in turn hurts picture quality.

Speaking of digital zoom, the camera Intelligent Feature resolution, Panasonic raises the entire zoom range from 8x to 10x the ZR3. Panasonic calls Intelligent zoom and it’s basically an improved digital zoom. The results are pretty good as far as you getting a little closer to digital, but the need to do it, is questionable. (There are two digital zoom options, but frankly they are useless and unnecessary.)

Panasonic Lumix DMC ZR3 Back Panasonic Lumix ZR3 Digital Camera Review

The resolution called Intelligent technology targets outlines, detailed texture surfaces and soft gradation in photos and improve them for clarity. It is in iA mode automatically applied and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture mode. The same goes for the Panasonic Intelligent Exposure option, improved shadow detail. Both work well.

Although it’s not a speed demon of ZR3′s shooting performance is good for its class. Mega zooms are usually slow start, but the time until the first shot at the ZR3 a decent 1.4 seconds. Shutter lag of 0.5 seconds in bright light and 0.7 in dim lighting. The camera uses Panasonic’s prefocus Quick AF in iA mode, that performance is improving slightly, but I found the results are inconsistent, and it eats into battery life. Shot-to-shot performance was a bit slow to 2.1 seconds without flash and 5 seconds with her. With its full resolution burst mode, the camera is able of 1.6 frames per second. There is a 3-megapixel high-speed burst that shoot at up to 10 frames per second for up to 100 shots. The photo quality is on par with a good camera phone, suitable for use on the Web without any cropping.

Overall picture quality from the ZR3 is very good for a compact camera. At its lower ISO speeds are sharp photos with good fine detail and little or no visible noise. At ISO 400, patients seem soft and there is a slight shift in color. Some fine detail is preserved, though, so you can still get good 4×6 prints, as long as you do not heavy cropping or enlarging. Images taken at higher sensitivities, OK, they are good enough for use on the Web, but there is a significant increase in noise and softness. The ZR3 has a high sensitivity mode for shooting in low light. It can detect a 3-megapixel image with ISOs from 1,600 to 6,400. Sorry, there are yellow spots of noise visible and occur at lower ISOs in this mode. Basically, it’s always there for a shot without flash, but the results are not much good.

The ZR3′s 25mm-equivalent wide-angle lens to show a little asymmetrical barrel distortion on the left. Likewise, if the lens is fully extended, there are slight pincushion distortion. Neither is bad enough to give cause for concern, though, and the sharpness is good, edge to edge. There is little to no color fringing in high contrast areas of the photo.

Panasonic Lumix DMC ZR3 Colors Panasonic Lumix ZR3 Digital Camera Review

Color performance is the weakest part of the ZR3′s photo quality and at the end is what brought from its overall rating. They tended to look washed out and slightly inaccurate in my test shots. However, that’s not to say they are not pleasant for many people it will be good. Plus, if you like punchy colors, there is a setting that Vivid would you get this. White balance is very good, except that a little warm inside, when set to Auto. The exposure is also very good, and Panasonic Intelligent Exposure does a good job of saving shadow detail without overexposing highlights.

The video quality is good, mini camcorder on par with a bag. Like them, if you are a lot of panning or shooting fast-moving subjects you do, you’ll see a fair amount of stuttering. You use the zoom while recording, and although it’s a mono mic, sound quality was very well preserved. There is a filter that helps out some WindCut too. Plus, the intelligent functions and many scene modes work for films such as pinhole camera, film grain, and high dynamic. Simply select the recording mode in the Photo mode and press.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 Review

December 17th, 2010

There is no doubt that now mirror-less system cameras are here to stay, with Samsung, Olympus and Sony, now all the way down, that blazed with Panasonic’s revolutionary Micro-G system, and much more sure to follow. The original Lumix G1, the first camera of the G Micro System is now over 18 months old, But Panasonic has not rested on its laurels. It has recently launched two new models like the second generation of the G-Micro-cameras, the PowerShot G2, which I reviewed last month, and the camera that I occupy today, the new Lumix G10.

Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Front Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Review

The G10 is the new entry-level series. His stablemate of Panasonic Lumix G2, with a high-res viewfinder field sequential, articulated monitor and HD video is currently selling for around $ 600, while the first generation of 1080p HD video models equipped GH1 and the compact GF1. The G10 is currently sold as a kit with the new 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom lens, which seems very reasonable, until you discover that the original G1 still available with a kit 14 – 45mm lens. However, to get price is not the main selling point of the G-Micro series, in fact, make a good APS-C DSLR for about 100 less than the price of the G10.

Even more worrying for Panasonic is the growing competition from other brands, especially the extremely impressive Samsung NX10, but with a full-sized 14.6MP APS-C CMOS sensor and 7.5 AMOLED screen. Sony NEX-5 has even a 14.2MP APS-size sensor and is crucial, much smaller and lighter than even the GF1, with a 16mm lens. Panasonic Olympus development partners have the stylish DMC-P1. In view of this growing competition is Panasonic’s new entry level model priced just a little too high?

At the first glance, the G10 much from the G1 or G2. It has the same relatively compact SLR-style body, made of durable plastic resin over a metal frame. The build quality is excellent, with tight panel matches and strong secure hatches. The matte surface provides more grip and resists scratches and well amazing. Unlike the other models in the G-Micro series, available in various colors, the G10 only in matte black surface shown here.

The control layout is very similar to the previous models, with a thick main mode dial to the right upper plate and a smaller AF mode dial on the top left. But a closer look reveals a few important differences, the most obvious is the monitor. It’s still an impressively fast and very sharp 7.5 cm (3.0 inch) TFT LCD screen, 460k as before, but where the G1 and G2 (and the GH1) expressed monitors have to turn in the situation and turn around a side-mounted hinges, the G10 has a fixed screen like Panasonic Lumix GF1. In most other respects the control layout is identical to the G2, with the rear-mounted rotary control (it was at the front on the G1) and highlights a special key for the iAuto mode. The only obvious difference is the lack of a dedicated video-record button.

Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Top Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Review

Another way in which the G10 differs from its more expensive siblings, the electronic viewfinder. The G1 and G2 have excellent field-sequential displays, the sharpness offer almost as good as an optical TTL viewfinder, but the G10 is equipped with a cheaper standard TFT LCD viewfinder, with a resolution of 202,000 points. It’s not bad, with decent color and high refresh rate, but it is not nearly sharp enough for accurate manual focusing, even if it does not automatically improve the view in manual focus mode, as soon as the focus ring moves.

Internally, the G10 shares most of the same features as the G2. It has the same Four Thirds format 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor, measuring 17.3 x 13.0mm, as well as the sensors in full-size Four Thirds DSLR cameras. Like the other G-Micro-cameras, the G10 has no internal image stabilization, but some of the system lenses feature Panasonic’s Mega OIS optical stabilization technology, although they are very expensive. The high quality of the brand Leica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 Mega OIS standard zoom, and the Panasonic 45-200mm f/4.0-5.6 telephoto zoom.

Like the G2, the G10 is equipped with Panasonic Intelligent resolution technology, the latest attempt has equipped us with the idea as digital zoom. It increases the edge contrast and detail to enhance digital zoom shots, and makes the image quality somewhat, but there is still no substitute for a proper telephoto.

Unlike the G1, the G10 has a video recording mode, but this is a slightly scaled-function. He draws with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 30 frames per second with mono audio over a single internal microphone recoded, but other than the G2 did not have the ability to plug in a stereo microphone. Video in Motion JPEG format as the superior of the AVCHD format recorded G2 and GH1. The picture quality is quite good though, and the microphone has an automatic wind cut so that the sound quality is not bad.

Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Back Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 Review

One thing that has not yet cleared the camera’s outstanding performance. It can start and an image in just over a second, and in single shot mode, a consistent rate of one shot every 0.7 seconds, which is very good by any standard, although some full-size DSLRs are faster. In continuous shooting mode it can can hold about three frames a second, although the number of shots in a row, shooting is used by the speed of the memory card. With a quick map of the class 10/18 shots slow steps to manage the buffer empty.

As with other mirror-less system cameras, the G10 has a contrast AF system that uses the image sensor, instead of using the rapid phase detection systems in the conventional DSLRs. Nevertheless, focusing is exceptionally fast and reliably in all lighting conditions, and not noticeably slow down in low light. The G10 has a bright AF-assist lamp with a useful range of about three meters. The pop-up flash is also very good, with a guide number of 11 at 100 ISO, and is easily capable of filling a large room with good frame coverage even at wide angle.

In terms of overall image quality of the G10 is virtually indistinguishable from the G2. The exposure is extremely accurate and reliable, color depth and saturation are superb, and the dynamic range is also very good. The new 14-42mm standard kit lens is much better than the old, with excellent edge to the sharpness and no visible chromatic aberration at any focal length or aperture edge.

Noise is very good at lower ISO settings, but like most Four Thirds sensor cameras there are some problems at higher sensitivities. It is visible noise and color marbling at 400 ISO, and this is getting worse with increasing speed to 6400 ISO setting is practically useless. Hopefully, Panasonic and Olympus will adapt the new sensor back-lit the Four Thirds system and reap some of the benefits of reduced noise. Until then, however, the larger is APS-C sensors used by its rivals still an advantage in image quality have.

Conclusion

Although it lacks a few amenities, the Panasonic Lumix G10 not to lose badly to its more expensive stablemate, the G2. The viewfinder is a bit disappointing, but the performance and image quality more than compensate. Build quality, handling and ease of use are all top notch and the camera feels a quality product. The question is whether they compete with their new rivals in its current price.

Panasonic Lumix G2 Review

December 15th, 2010

Word uses a touch screen, interchangeable lens camera has taken a while, but it is amazing that such a gate does not develop DSLR from a major manufacturer like Canon or Nikon. Instead, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 is connected to the Micro Four Thirds shooter.

The G2 reaches the first Micro Four Thirds camera, the G1, which was announced almost two years ago. There is no other than a touch screen and HD video recording function is not too much to say other notable improvements. That is, we see the G2 as a benchmark for future mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras with a touch-sensitive display.

Design

The G2 do the aesthetics G1 not very different, and in this case, the shooter, the DSLR-look, which is pretty boring. We have seen what to do with the Micro Four Thirds standard for smaller cameras with interchangeable lenses, because the E-P1 and GF1. This makes us wonder why Panasonic does not shrink the G2 to the part that obviously in the favor of consumers. To this end, the company explained to us that his research showed that some users has been the traditional look of a DSLR, so that was styled after the G2 still prefer.

The front of the G2 looks like a DSLR with faux prism hump that the electronic viewfinder (EVF) houses. The handle has been a comfortable grip and a silver band. On the opposite side, the AF-assist lamp.

The back of the Lumix houses the button for the camera. shot a 3-inch widescreen LCD is capable of making it to the shooter when you’re the EVF or not to scrape in a bag during transport, that are folded. The display is a four-way navigation pad with features such as ISO and white balance allocated to them. The dial is on the G1 on the handle now uses strategically near the thumbrest removed for easy access.

Panasonic has some adjustments to the layout of the buttons on the top of G2. For example, the measurement method using the slider on the left side, while including a switch to set the focus going. In the G1, the Film Mode button Q.menu and were next to the dial, but in their place now are the special video recording and intelligent Auto (iA) buttons.

The card slot, which was on the G1 on the side of the handle has been moved to the same compartment as the battery compartment on the underside of the G2. While such a transfer can not affect the most users, we think, amateur photographers who could fit in the new Lumix on a stand hinder difficulties changing SD cards as the mounting plate can have the hinges of the batteries slot.

Features

The touch screen is the G2′s greatest asset, but note that the camera is not totally dependent on the display. If not, it is not all keys. As with most cameras, touch screen you can tap on the LCD to focus on the subject. Shutterbugs can also use the touch-shutter function that triggers the shutter and takes a picture when you tap on the screen. While recording, you can touch the screen to change the lens’ focal point, and we think that’s a great idea. Finally, it is in playback mode, you can navigate with your fingers to increase over the LCD display by the committee or body. One thing that you can not do with the touchscreen, you must explore the Record menu, which will be done via the physical keys.

As of now there is no other cameras with interchangeable lenses with a touch screen, we think the G2 closest competitors are the Olympus E-P2, Sony NEX-5 and Samsung NX10. Here is a brief overview of their functions.

Like the G1, G2 uses a 1440 k-point EVF and can either manually by pressing a button next to or over the sensor next to the eyepiece, if you can hold the camera in the face to be activated. We are, however, be noted that most users will probably want to use to make the 3-inch widescreen display for the design of their shots.

The G2 has a feature called Intelligent resolution (IR), which automatically sharpens the image while preserving detail. IR sounds familiar, because the same name is used in the past Lumix compact cameras and an improved version of the digital zoom. But increase for the G2, not the IR zoom, but it increases the picture. This feature also for the shooting and has three levels (Low, standard and high) of settings, depending on your preference. We will see later, to determine whether this function changes the picture dramatically.

Performance

The G2 start was almost instantaneously, just like a DSLR. Shutter lag with pre-focusing around 0.1 second measured, but about 0.3 to 0.5 seconds, with no excluded pre-focusing. Time-to-first-shot clocked a swift 0.2 seconds.

The Lumix employs contrast-based autofocus system, consider using the increasingly less-AF phase in digital cameras saw. However, we found the AF speed for the G2 very satisfied and most consumers are not likely to tell in a position performance difference between the Micro Four Thirds and a DSLR.

Burst speed was up to 3.2fps filled with the G2, from 3fps to its predecessor. Although this may seem like a minor upgrade, it means that cameras of this caliber is always faster.

Image quality

The image quality of the G2 is pretty similar to the G1. The shooter has an ISO range of 100 to 6,400. But as with other Micro Four Thirds camera, we advise users not to ISO 1600 running surface. The images are at ISO 100 relative to ISO 400 captured digital artifacts clean and keep many details in highlights and shadow regions. Noise begins to creep in more visible at ISO 800, but it will not appear if you have a large photo or inspection of 100 percent print from a computer.

Previous work we discussed the resolution and intelligent as it should to improve the image quality. We have two similar shots at ISO 200 and compared them. We found that the image with IR (High) applied looked sharper and shadows have been brightened to show a little more detail. We have seen no visible loss of detail when IR was activated.

The color reproduction of the G2 was satisfactory in our tests. Sounds packed a light blow, without over-saturated colors and were correct. The sensor’s dynamic range was astonishing that, in order to make more detail in light and dark areas.

Conclusion

Is the G2 a game changer in the world of cameras with interchangeable lenses? Besides the touch screen of the Lumix, the only details are about on par with most of its competitors, so it really upgrade to consumers currently using a touch screen or targeted compact, wishing something like this. We think the touch-sensitive implementation would work better in a camera that included a form factor as the GF1. That is, Panasonic has taken a step forward in employment and a touch screen for shooting lens, and it’s only a matter of time catching up with other brands.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Camera Review

September 24th, 2010

The Micro Four Thirds camera market starts to be a little tight: the time of writing, both Panasonic and Olympus have three models available, with more to come touted this year.

The Lumix GF1 is the most successful of these cameras so far in terms of delivery on its promise of SLR-like images in a compact form factor. Although it is expensive, it is a worthwhile investment for any photographer serious enter the Micro Four Thirds world.

Design and Features

Sharing a similar retro aesthetic of the other popular Panasonic camera, the Lumix LX3 is a compact version of the GF1 other company Micro Four Thirds cameras, the G1 and GH1. The body is harder than it seems at 285g without lens.

After using the G1, and GH1 are fully brought GF1 the controls on the smaller form factor, although the video recording button, the top of the camera has been moved next to the shutter button and dial. As with the other models, switching between aperture and shutter speed selection by pressing the Control Wheel is a little confusing if you are not used to it is done, but works well once acclimatised. Unlike his older companion G-series, which does not articulate GF1 LCD screen. Instead, it is only a 3-inch screen on the back of the camera.

At the peak around the mode dial is the standard G-series method for changing the shooting mode from single frame, burst, exposure bracketing, and self-timer. The flash has its own button that opens from the main mass, that is also in the automatic mode, the GF1 not to automatically activate the flash note. Like the other cameras that you GF1 a preview of changes shutter speed and aperture in real time, although almost always a clear presentation of the final image is tricky due to the refresh rate of the screen.

The GF1′s main competitor, the Olympus Pen E-P2 (the E-P1 is not really in the same league when it comes to prices and specifications). Side by side, they divide the two cameras a lot in common but the main distinguishing feature is the GF1 pop-up flash and a bit higher resolution LCD screen. Below is a table comparing the two cameras on its main selling points.

Panasonic Lumix DMC GF1 Back Panasonic Lumix DMC GF1 Camera Review

Surprisingly, Panasonic has chosen not to unite the GF1 with an electronic viewfinder (EVF), like the E-P2, so we could test the EVF and on the specifications alone, the Olympus version, it trumps resolution. The GF1 also lacks a dedicated microphone input for an external microphone, the E-P2′s accessory port allows a stereo microphone.

The included 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens is incredibly lightweight and fits nicely on the body of GF1. However, there is no image stabilization built into the lens, there are still image stabilization in the camera body, a sore point for some photographers, who can mount older, classic lenses on the GF1. The 20mm has a nice feel though and displayed allows for easier manual focusing thanks to the enlarged screen on the LCD, when the focus ring is turned.

Video encoding is ensured thanks to AVCHD Lite or Motion JPEG, 60 frames per second at 720p. Like the E-P2 can record video with the GF1 filters such as film-mode (including black and white or natural/vibrant/nostalgic effects).

Performance

The GF1 is certainly up to speed when they relate to services, especially compared to the Olympus cameras. Start with his first shot and within 0.8 seconds of the Panasonic was much faster than the E-P2, which we clocked at three seconds.

Image quality

When we tested the G1 against the GH1 we somewhat surprised to find that the G1 delivered superior images in terms of color reproduction and overall tonality. The GF1 comes Fortunately, much closer to what we G1 with the shooting, that his images are seen excellent way. Receivables are on the mark and it copes well with difficult lighting conditions, particularly areas of shadow and highlight contrast.

Now it’s time for the exciting part: pitting the GF1 against the E-P2 in an all-out to shoot. To be fair to both cameras, we have a lens – is to assess the image quality – the Lumix 20mm f/1.7.

Round 1: Color

We now know that the e-P2 has an excellent job of rendering colors, but this was observed when we his results in isolation and in comparison to non-Micro Four Thirds cameras. The GF1 is swinging in this test prove that the Olympus has oversaturate and create more powerful reflections. While this may be desirable, it included not only the glaring GF1 the image.

Round 2: Macro

The 17mm lens may not be the best suited to macro photography, but it is certainly possible to get some good results thanks to the wide maximum aperture. We’re not really sure what happened here: it looks like the GF1 not quite the light intended good as the E-P2 income is more representative of the actual lighting conditions.

Round 3: High ISO sensitivity

Since the GF1 can only reach ISO 3200, we have the E-P2 is limited to that level as well. From the pictures below it looks like the E-P2 starts to detail and smear things, like lose the sensitivity increased. The GF1, while loud, operates more details.

The GF1 is the most complete micro Four Thirds camera yet. Like the E-P2, it is a pleasure to shoot with and delivers excellent images, but a full-fledged camera than the Olympus, and we recommend it wholeheartedly.

Panasonic Lumix LX5 Digital Camera Review

September 20th, 2010

Meet the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 – The summit of the company’s compact camera range. The first thing you notice is when you can pick it up, that makes it even on the smallest almost as Panasonic. It is with the same angular Soviet that it is both pleasing to the eye and the pocket and make.

As with the rest of these high powered mini-machines, the LX5 also surprisingly easy and not fiddly to use – of course, for the most part anyway. If you do not know any better, it would be very happy as a medium-to low-range gate. It has a rather larger standard five-button navigation array, Quick Menu control and playback mode with the only clues to something, the AF/AE lock, jog wheel for the thumb and the dedicated video record on the top.

panasonic lumix dmc lx5 side Panasonic Lumix LX5 Digital Camera Review

The inside is where this compact but holds the aces. The CCD sensor has been redesigned again made by the enhancements to the LX3 and decent 1/1.63-inch size unit offers a wider dynamic range, higher sensitivity and better color saturation. Panasonic claims an increase in the numbers around 30-40 percent, and although it to the user, the facts are impossible to quantify, of course we were happy with the depth of color and even exposure of our pictures offered. Performance in low light, we have to save for the full review.

The Leica lens also disappoint. It’s the same F/2.0, 24mm Summicron lens than on the LX3, but they managed to eke out that in this compact zoom up to 3.8x, 90mm equivalent. It was a little frustrating right after he hands on the Panasonic FZ100, but if you want more telephoto capability, you’d best plump for another model.

What you get instead, but the promise, with this wide open all the fun of narrow depth of field photography. In practice it takes to immerse a good bit of menu to set it up and the jog wheel is a touch too close to the thumb, to really in their own come here – the way the focus ring works on the Canon PowerShot S90 – but there are all sorts of other ways to get around the menus instead.

What does the LX5 on the lens barrel, have the aspect ratio selector, as appeared on the previous model, and you can not ask why Panasonic has trouble with such a good area for a function that does not serve simply to your effectively reduce sensor size, can also be easily reached by cutting after the fact anyway.

panasonic lumix dmc lx5 back Panasonic Lumix LX5 Digital Camera Review

The line of the LX5 not broken by lightning, because the little devil is hidden in the body and refreshment appear instead of your command when the camera thinks it fit. It is a hot shoe for an external light source, but it should be without good results, as have the camera rises up to ISO 3200 pixels mixing kicks in – up to ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 through out the options. Realistically, we were sure can be shot at ISO 800, without offending any noise problems. Combine that with the wide aperture and you do not you need that Flash as often as you might think.

There is no burst shooting button on the chassis that you are using the FZ100, but that does not mean you can not trigger any action from the LX5. He shoots 2.5fps at full resolution, but a little disappointing, only for 5 frames. If that is, take what you want rather predictable then you will be able to catch it clearly enough with the LX5, but otherwise it’s not really what it’s designed for. Of course, you can view the details of the speed, but to sacrifice again, is the bottom line for another camera choose when action shots, what you’re after.

Where it is fast in the focus and shutter lag. The LX5 uses Panasonic sound speed AF technology, which in practice means that you barely have the matter noted by all if it to zeros, in fact, it gets to the point, if you are not sure if it actually find out how it’s done scanning of the camera. A good part of the test very crisp 460k point, 3-inch LED display supports confirmed it all happened – even if the depth of the paint on rendered not quite what you see on your computer – almost instantly before the joy get that is the shutter lag 0.007 seconds, if you decide it’s time to grab. It looks as if using an SLR for responsiveness – but without the pleasure of the mirror Flick.

Once you feed in 720p video recording and the fact that the whole is only 271g, it makes for a pretty nice package.

Panasonic Lumix DMC LX5 Panasonic Lumix LX5 Digital Camera Review

While it is difficult to argue that the Panasonic does not LX5 is everything you could for a high-end compact camera ask, it is rather the feeling that you get are at arm’s length from him. There is an obvious point and use press machine for work and there are certainly enough automatic options to keep your shots properly exposed, but at the same time there does not seem to know much about it for DLSR or higher knowledge provides users looking for a kick to camera keep them at all times. Most of the manual was easy to make fun away from the fingertips to the possible.

Nevertheless, we would certainly not say that this is not a good machine. It works well. It takes great pictures, but somehow it’s just not a whole lot of fun. People choose it as a step up not too much of it, and enthusiasts would rather play with something else to learn. If you want first class, and press, however, this could be what you’re after.
