Good shooting in low light without the help of a flash is a rarely achieved goal in the world of compact cameras. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 does it with three of its components: a new sensor design, a high-end lens and a fast image processor. The combination pays off in low-light shots, and various other functions. However, although WX1 is able to deliver fast performance and a number of very good pictures, they will expect exceptional results equal to the functions probably disappoint.
One of the most remarkable things about the WX1 the amount of the Sony technology crammed into such a small, lightweight body. Following the back-lit R Exmor CMOS sensor and a fast f2.4 wide angle Sony G lens, the camera has most of the same features as the considerably larger HX1. Both the G-sensor and lens quality found in Sony’s dSLR and prosumer camcorder line.
Sony managed to get almost all of the controls at the back of the camera to get without feeling cramped, confusing while ensuring a secure grip with a hand that does not result in accidental button or dial changes. There are only three buttons on top: the usual power and shutter buttons, and one on the right before turning on the high-speed shooting. The power button is strangely close the shutter, just left of center camera. While this speeds up turning the camera on your left hand, it makes it too easy to accidentally turn off the camera.

A single menu button gives you access to shooting controls and a selection of settings for. What i like is the camera’s ability to alert you about adjusting certain settings. For example, if you WX1 for the measurement of light spot, you will not be able to turn on Face Detection. The WX1 tells you on the screen Face detection is not available because the spot metering is selected. Cameras from different suppliers generally advise you what needs to be disabled to run on a black-out option.
Outside a few special shooting modes, Sony continues to shoot pretty basic options WX1. Although you will not find full control over aperture or shutter speed, do something to get the select button for just about any point-and-shoot user. Going around the dial, you have a movie mode 720p HD quality video using the optical zoom (up the motor, however, to hear), Program Auto access to ISO, white balance, focus and meter, Sony Intelligent Auto Mode, Easy Mode, which takes away all but a few basic shooting options and SCN, which you can choose from 11 scene positions, but automatically handles all other institutions.
Then there are the more specialized functions. The sweeping panorama option, you can shoot panorama horizontally or vertically by pressing the shutter button, which is unlike other cameras that require multiple shots. The last two are the Anti Motion Blur and Handheld Twilight modes. Both use the camera to quickly capture six images and combine them into one image with less blur and more detail than you normally would with just one shot. The results are impressive, until you have to closely look at the images full size. They are ideal for use on 8×10 inch or less, though.
If you tend to make it in Auto mode, Sony’s Intelligent Auto is in reliable results because it takes eight of scene types (brand iSCN) and runs on face detection and image stabilization. Sony iSCN can be set to Auto or Advanced, the difference is that in difficult lighting situations the camera will automatically take two pictures with different settings, allowing you a better chance of getting a good picture. There are three levels of high-speed shooting at full resolution, that all living on the performance of Sony claims. However, once the photos shot you have to wait until they are saved on the memory card – about 2 to 3 seconds before taking a picture. Also worth mentioning is that the WX1 exposure bracketing that takes three photos, one can select the exposure and then another two to plus and minus 0.3EV, 0.7EV, 1.0 EV or has.

Fast performance is not a problem for WX1, it is one of the fastest cameras we’ve tested in its class. The wake-to-first-shot time is 1.5 seconds with an almost identical shot-to-shot time of 1.7 seconds. Using the flash bumps that only one timeout to 2.3 seconds. Shutter release time lag in bright sunlight is a scant 0.3 seconds, in low light is just 0.7 seconds. The camera has no continuous shooting mode, but the high-speed burst mode is capable of snapping off 9.6 frames per second at full resolution.
When it comes to picture quality, WX1 is a tough camera to judge. Going strictly by what happens between ISO sensitivities, the camera is a fairly typical point-and-shoot, good to ISO 200, but from ISO 400 and above, noise reduction muck up fine details. This is especially noticeable when images are viewed at 100 percent or heavily cropped.
The WX1′s consistent color performance of different sensitivities up to ISO 1600 keep them usable for 8×10 prints and smaller. Photos at ISO 3200 look washed out, but can be printed on 4×6 inch and smaller – assuming you’re not picky. There is some color noise / artifacts at all ISO’s, including the lowest setting of ISO 160. If you want to make poster-size prints and stare at them from a foot away, you probably will be disappointed with what you see.
The WX1 has an impressive center sharpness, but the pictures to soften up the sides. All in all, though, the lens of this camera is quite large. There is surprisingly little barrel distortion seen how wide it is. There was no pincushion at the longest lens position, and I did not see much in the way of chromatic aberration. Color, white balance and exposure were all excellent in the WX1 – beautiful, natural and lively.

What it really comes down to is WX1 expectations. Just because Sony uses a sensor found in its high-end camcorders and a lens based on its Alpha digital SLR cameras, you can expect an excellent picture quality? It certainly sounds reasonable. But in the end of the WX1 is still a point-and-shoot, is above the average pictures under difficult conditions where most other cameras in its class fail. It’s a nice camera to use.
